This is the ultimate no-fuss apple crumble. I like to use a mix of eating apples and classic Bramleys for the perfect balance.

It’s comforting, simple, and seriously delicious — you’re going to love it.

Ingredients

  • 1.5kg mixed apples

  • 150g golden caster sugar

  • 1 lemon

  • 50g unsalted butter (cold)

  • 100g plain flour

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F/Gas 6).

  2. Peel and core the apples, then cut them into roughly 3cm chunks.

  3. Add the apples to a saucepan over medium heat with 100g sugar and a few fine gratings of lemon zest.

  4. Cover with a lid and cook for about 5 minutes, until the apples have softened. Remove from the heat and let them cool slightly.

  5. While the apples cool, dice the butter and place it in a mixing bowl with the flour. Rub together with your fingertips until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs, then mix in the remaining sugar to give the crumble some texture.

  6. Spoon the apples into a 25cm x 30cm baking dish and scatter the crumble topping evenly over the top.

  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until golden and bubbling. Best served warm with vanilla custard.
